When we set off on our zero waste journey, the last things on our minds were zero waste, green pillows. While we don’t adhere to the 2 year recommendation for replacing pillows, the time came to replace ours earlier this year. Since starting our zero waste journey, as we’ve had to replace things, we’ve looked into how we can place items with more sustainable, eco-friendly products and target higher-quality goods that will last longer as well.
When we started our search for a sustainable and green pillow option, we really didn’t know what we were looking for aside from a product that is from a trustworthy brand, is high-quality, lasts a while, and is made from sustainable resources or with sustainability in mind. We learned that there’s much more to sustainable textiles than just those categories.

What should you look for in a sustainable pillow?
The first thing we looked for in our search for a zero waste pillow option was how the materials for the pillow were manufactured or produced. In the case of the Avocado Green Pillow, all of the materials are sustainably sourced, all-natural, and organic. Not only that, the pillows come with a slew of certifications: GOTS and GOLS certifications for organic textiles, GREENGUARD Gold certification ensuring strict standards on chemical pollutants and emissions, and vegan certification ensuring no animal products were used in their making.
Additionally, the Avocado brand is a 1% For The Planet company delivering 1% of their revenues to vetted nonprofit organizations and is not only a certified Climate Neutral organization; they are actually carbon-negative!
All in all, we felt very good about the product we were buying both from an impact perspective and from a quality perspective.
What Avocado Pillows did we test?
My wife and I like to sleep with different pillow thicknesses and firmness levels. I ended up going with the Avocado Molded Latex Pillow for the firmness and she ended up getting the Avocado Green Pillow. The nice thing about the Avocado Pillow is the ability to change its firmness and thickness by adding or removing stuffing (conveniently, it comes with extra stuffing and a little case to keep it organized).
Thoughts on the Avocado Green Pillow and Avocado Molded Latex Pillow
We ended up loving each of the Avocado pillows we chose for ourselves. Ultimately, it took my wife a few weeks to get the right fill level in her pillow – she tried it with the standard fill amount it arrived with and felt like she wanted a bit less, so it took a couple of trials to get to the amount she liked and slept well with. As for the Molded Latex Pillow and me, from the get-go, the pillow was amazing; it had the right level of support and firmness yet still felt soft to lay on – it was perfect!
The quality of the pillows is above and beyond what we were expecting. Having typically purchased our pillows from big box stores, these pillows blow those out of the water. There’s no lumpiness to deal with, the stitch looks and feels very strong, and the case and filling are both amazing.
From a sustainability point of view, we felt the pillows and, more generally, Avocado as a brand were great choices. From the certifications on their products to the certifications for their brand and the commitments they make, it was the right fit for us. Additionally, the fact that these pillows are latex or latex-derived will hopefully extend their useful life.
Where to buy Avocado Green Pillows
Avocado has several ways for you to shop for their products. If you’re lucky enough to be located near one of their retail / showroom locations, you can go in to check out their products for yourself. Most of us will have to shop from the online store or schedule a virtual zoom retail experience.
To sum it up, the Avocado Molded Latex Pillow is probably the best pillow I’ve ever slept on and we will absolutely be using Avocado pillows for our other pillow needs. We’re also excited to explore some of their other products as well!
